The RYA National Sailing Scheme

Beginner (5 days)
Start Sailing (Level 1) and Basic Skills (Level 2) are run together as a five-day course. It is expected that at the end of this course, participants will be at Level 2 standard, will be safety conscious, have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of sailing without an instructor on board in light winds.

Intermediate (4 days)
Seamanship Skills/Day Sailing - sail independently. This is a course for those with experience or a Level 2 certificate, who want to improve their skills. By the end of the course you will be able to handle the boat in moderate conditions and solve problems afloat as well as passage planning and decision making for small boat cruising. You will be taught how to reef, recover man overboard, anchor, sail backwards and sail in adverse conditions.

Advanced Sailing (4 days)
Performance Sailing and sailing with Spinnakers Improve your boat handling and confidence in performance boats, use the crew and equipment to sail efficiently in a variety of conditions. Be able to spot and use wind shifts and gusts to better effect.

Instructor Course (5 days)
This is an intensive course that leads to an assessment by an RYA coach/assessor. It will cover all aspects of the RYA syllabus and will provide excellent training for those who wish to teach keelboat sailing. You must have successfully completed the pre-entry test of sailing ability. You will also need to have a recognised first aid certificate and have a L2 powerboat certificate.

Seamanship (2 days)
This is a course for those with experience or a Level 2 certificate who want to improve their skills. For the successful sailor this course will enable you to handle the boat in moderate conditions and solve problems afloat. You will be taught how to reef, recover man overboard, anchor, sail backwards and sail in adverse conditions.

Day Sailing (2 days)

Powerboat L2 (2 days) limited entry.
This is an introduction to boat handling skills. Time will be spent practicing manoeuvres such as coming alongside, and man overboard as well as some high speed work. L2 can also be used as the practical assessment for the International Certificate of Competence for taking your boat abroad. Speak to us for details.

Safety Boat Course (2 days)
This aims to introduce the techniques used in powerboats providing safety and rescue cover for training fleets and assisting in race management. It covers boat handling, rescuing canoes, windsurfers and dinghies and towing. Candidates must hold a L2 award, a first aid certificate is
also strongly recommended.

Start Racing - go club racing (2 days)
This course is designed to give the confidence, skills and knowledge to take part in club racing in good conditions. The course involves the sailor in a range of enjoyable exercises designed to build confidence and improve skills through practice. It is assumed that every student starting this course has already mastered the practical skills and absorbed the background knowledge required for Basic Skills Level 2
